This post may seem a contradiction to my last post that advertises a low starting price for apparel catalog photography. There isn’t one. We believe in doing high quality work and work with you to obtain the quality of photography you need at a price that fits your budget.
The message however is the same. As I walk through the Los Angeles Fashion District I am frequently assaulted by some of the worst photography I have ever seen. In some images I find it difficult to find anything right. The lighting is bad, the color is off, and the composition, styling, and selection of models are a definite turn off. Often these photos have been blown up to very large sizes and are displayed at the entrance to the shops.
Clearly the designer saved needed money on the photography, but the photos do more harm than good. Social Media may have ushered in a new era where we accept horrible photography as the norm, but while it may only be on a subconscious level, the person seeing the image will assume the same lack of quality and attention to detail will be present in the clothing. They also feel for reasons they don’t stop to consider that they do not want to be associated with the brand. Hence, bad photography will prevent them from entering the store.
On the other hand, why do consumers pay such staggeringly high prices for some of the big fashion brands? Once again it is the photography that is used to market the brand. Every aspect of the photography, the message it is to impart, and who it is to impart it to has been considered. The production values are in place to ensure that the aesthetics of the photo are over the top, and that it will create the desire on the part of those who see it to have that experience for themselves.
